"Beautiful Burnout is a must-see... it is a funny yet incredibly honest and moving exploration into what is truly at the heart of the boxing culture. You need not be a fan of the sport to love this production! It’s a knockout!"

In 2012 the New Zealand International Arts Festival brought you the TV3 Season of Beautiful Burnout, another knockout performance from acclaimed theatre company the National Theatre of Scotland, creators of 2008 Festival smash hit Black Watch.

How far would you go to achieve a dream? The square circle  is where a single punch can make them come true, or leave them pulverised on the canvas.

With flinchingly realistic training and fight sequences, Beautiful Burnout channeled the breathless physical action that audiences loved in Black Watch. But it was much more than just flying fists. Writer Bryony Lavery’s heart-wrenching and deeply human story followed five young fighters as they desperately tried to escape Glasgow’s mean, grey streets. Friendship, family, beliefs – what were they willing to sacrifice? All was revealed as the sweat, punches, blood and banter started to fly.

Co-produced by award-winning companies Frantic Assembly (Stockholm, Othello) and the National Theatre of Scotland (Black Watch, The Bacchae) – this compelling drama was born out of a unplanned trip to a New York boxing gym. Through spectacular staging, Beautiful Burnout literally took audiences into the heart of the action. With a boxing ring on a revolving stage and a backdrop of glittering video screens, the audience sat ringside for a night of drama that packed a punch in more ways than one.

Writer Bryony Lavery

Directors/Choreographers Scott Graham and Steven Hoggett

With Stuart Martin, Blythe Duff, Kevin Guthrie, Eddie Kay, Vicki Manderson, Taqi Nazeer, Ewan Stewart

All ticket holders to Beautiful Burnout received a complimentary pass to a cityfitness gym.  These were distributed after the Festival.
