Kate Grenville and Alan Hollinghurst’s novels are often multi-layered, spanning many years and many generations, with strong recurring themes of time and memory.

Reviewers have praised Kate Grenville’s novels as vivid and vital acts of ‘testimony, memory and mourning’. Her 2005 book, The Secret River, was inspired by the darker regions of Kate’s family history and was awarded the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize. Alan Hollinghurst won the Man Booker Prize for The Line of Beauty, the last in a quartet of novels exploring gay life in Britain from its pre-1967 illegality through to the hedonism of the 1980s. His latest, The Stranger’s Child, is a multi-generational epic following the lives of two families. Kate and Alan were joined in conversation by Linda Olsson.
