Germaine Greer
Shakespeare’s Wife

Event description

Addto shortlist

Before she burst onto the world stage with The Female Eunuch (1970), Germaine Greer gained her PhD from the University of Cambridge with a thesis on Shakespeare’s early comedies. She has also taught Shakespeare at universities in Australia, Britain and the USA. In her book Shakespeare’s Wife, Greer examines the little known life of Ann Shakespeare. The Sunday Telegraph wrote: ‘Excellent... a marvellous imagining of the life of Shakespeare’s wife and a devastating exposure of the misogyny of the male biographers who have disparaged her’.

The 2012 New Zealand International Arts Festival embraces a strong Shakespearean thread and this session offers insightful discussion about the life and times of the great poet and playwright. Germaine was joined in conversation by Linda Hardy, who teaches Shakespeare at Victoria University.
