Event description

""Makes the novel speak in ways it hasn’t spoken before”"

Kim Scott was the first indigenous Australian writer to win the Miles Franklin Award. His latest novel, That Deadman Dance, explores the early contact between the Aboriginal Noongar people and the first European settlers in Albany, Western Australia. It has received many awards, including the Western Australian Premier’s Book Award and the Victorian Premier’s Literary Award.

Descending from the Noongar people, Kim Scott grew up on the South Coast of Western Australia. Although dissonant relations between non-Aboriginal and indigenous Australians are at the heart of his work, That Deadman Dance presents a startlingly positive picture of cross-cultural interaction before the violence and shift in power. Kim was joined in conversation by Tina Makereti.
